Hi,

So my friend has an issue with his Asus GTX 660. For some reason after drivers are installed, the card does one of two things.

1.Image freezes (computer crashes as well)

2.Does what it shows in the image below (crashes as well).

It only does this after a few mins of the computer being turned on. I have also tried this on my PC as well with the same outcome.

My thought is that it looks similar to when the Xbox 360's GPU was melting away.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Well you can always just put your hand near the card to...
get MSI afterburner to check the temps, those are certainly artifacts, the question is, are they heat induced. also the card could be becomming unstable, in which case you might be able to boost its voltage to keep it stable, or underclock it slightly. but first the temps are needed. also if possible could you post the full system specs?

I cant keep the PC alive long enough to install and test afterburner. It is worrying, Someone on Linus forum suggested changing the thermal compound. Might be worth ago. People also suggested baking the card :/

Thanks for the help

Well you can always just put your hand near the card to gauge temps. new paste cannot hurt, but the oven is a last ditch effort, and only buys you some time. as mentioned above, try running on integrated graphics and installing MSI afterburner.
the more I think of it, the more I suspect that card. although it could be the PSU.

oh my god please change the thermal paste. that will tell you if the card is shot or not. you need to get your hands dirty with this one. take the cooler off, assess the thermal paste, reapply (with a liberal amount of paste) and then carefully put the card back together. if it still does this after new thermal paste then you're most likely looking at a shot card.

and yes, it could be power supply problems too although its less likely. what are you system specs? please list system specs with PSU model included
