Hey guys, newish builder here. I just bought an EVGA 850w PSU and a new case, and migrated my parts over. Due to a lack of insight on my part, I seemed to have forgotten to plug in a certain "CPU" cable from my modular PSU into the motherboard (new to the whole modular PSU thing). Anyway, as I went to turn on my PC it seemed to light up and turn off instantly. I came to the conclusion quickly enough that it was because I had not plugged that CPU cable into my motherboard.

Now, I'm paranoid and wondering if I could have caused any damage to my components with my lack of care. Everything seems to be going fine, maybe I just need some reassurance, lol.

Thanks

Solution
No, you didn't damage anything. This is quite a common misstep and it would be very bad for the motherboard manufacturer and / or the CPU manufacturer if this were to damage anything.

Rest assured, this is a very commonly overlooked connection.

Since the CPU power connector powers the VRM's which in turn regulate the power delivered to the CPU, when the motherboard turned on, it began the POST check and found the CPU missing and shut off.

No problem, glad I could set your mind at ease.

I'd wager you could find at least a 1000 threads where individuals powering up their system for the first time to find that it didn't POST, and this was the cause. You'd probably find a dozen or more with my name in those threads too I'd bet.
