CD's freeze up Windows Explorer when trying to format

Here's something I'm sure will be very easy to overcome. I have an ASUS Rogue happily running Windows 10. I've enough of the Mac's.
Inserting a Disk into the DVD-ROM drive at times will work in the sense that it reads the contents. Other times it will not show up on the Windows Explorer at all.
When it does show up & I try to format that Disk, Windows Explorer freezes, the icons disappear on the bottom of the Taskbar and presto, I have to force down the computer with the Power Button.

I've tried an external ASUS DVD-ROM and I've seen that freeze up everything also but not as often as the Internal Drive. I've tried CD's and DVD's and have the same fun results with both.

I've uninstalled the Drivers for the DVD-ROM from the Device Manager and rehooted, I mean rebooted and no changes. As to updating from the Device Manager, that is about as useless as things gets for very very seldom does one get an update from there.

I've checked the ASUS site for updates but nothing is even listed there. While I go and get a bowl of custard to eat, has anyone else enjoyed this problem before and if so, is it something that can be overcome or does one have to live in despair because of it.
Please, should it be that any cannot see this post, do contact me at once. Thank you.

1| Can you please pass on your full systems specs? An Asus Rogue hasn't been in existence since a long time unless you're talking about the ROG series of gaming hardware/laptop's. If the latter then you'll need to be specific thus the system specs or if a laptop, providing a model number. Here's how sheer the SKU's are.

2| Have you disabled automatic device driver updates prior to removing your devices from Device Manager?

3| The issue with optical drives is that Windows 10 is trying to phase out it's use much like how floppy drives became non existent in their support list once Windows 8 came along. Microsoft did one up by dropping any support for Windows media player and Bluray media playback to direct people to online content viewing. It might also be that you ODD's are beginning to fail or the media inserted are faulty.

4| Might I ask how you've migrated to Windows 10? Did you go the free upgrade path or via a licence key?

Specs are as follows - ASUS Republic of Gamers G750JW. I migrated to Windows 10 through the free upgrade. No clean install.
I did not disable automatic driver updates prior to uninstalling the Drivers from Device Manager.
Since I posted, I've put another DVD-ROM drive in. I've had several exciting issues as before when trying to format a cd-rw. Most of the time it's working but the odd time, it flips off the rails and freezes up my Windows Explorer and also the icons on the taskbar do a disappearing act. I have to force a shut down and begin over again.
This morning, I did notice a couple of the CD's wouldn't show up in this laptop nor in another laptop I have here. I shall therefore pass those two disk on to someone that doesn't want them.
I also read somewhere that it is best not to format from Windows Explorer. Would you agree with that?
I therefore have formatted half a dozen times this morning with no issues from Computer / Disk Management.
It will be interesting to get your take and advice on this issue. Thanks for the reply.
