how do I tell if my hard drive is failing or if 100% disk use is something else?

my hard drive is having lots of troubles it seems. disk use is always at 100% sometimes over ive seen it go to 102%.

values as low as 1.7mb/s in a single program send it in the red to 100% disk use. MPC-HC doesnt load movies like it used to -- often times they glitch and have no sound and fail to sync up.

programs and games crash -- and things dont work smoothly when disk use isnt at 0%.

I have seen random data corruption and blue screens in win 10 too -- one time nvidiainspector stopped working until I did a system restore because some of the .net files became corrupted out of nowhere.

the drive is a seagate 1TB drive thats4 or 5 years old, and has been running ok until now even though its taken a beating.

Im considering buying a new Solid state drive to replace it, but I cant afford it. if this drive is salvagable I will save it, but if its dead I will buy a new one before the whole pc is useless.

ive tried panda and avira -- no viruses detected. spybot, malwarebytes and super antispyware pick up nothing significant.

although my memory and sdisk usage are very sketchy looking anyway.

is my best/safest bet to buy a new hard drive and do a clean recovery on it?
