One partition of my Hard Drive is very slow (almost no speed)

Good day!
I have a problem with my Hard Drive. It has 2 partitions (C: with windows, D: with my personal files). Everything was OK like a month ago. The hard drive is a little bit older (like 3-4 years) 500GB Hitachi. C: drive works well, no problems. But when I want to copy FROM D: drive to another drive (C: or external) it is very slow. The speed is usually under 1MB/s (around 300KB/s, sometimes it stops copying completely 0B/S), sometimes the speed jumps up to around 30MB/s (which I consider "normal speed" for my PC), but that lasts for like 10 seconds or so. Also, the whole Windows is freezing and lagging while copying. When I copy TO D: (from other drives) it goes fast (around 30MB/s) without any problems. I want to make a clean install of Windows 10 but I have to backup some files from the D: drive, but with this speed it would take forever and maybe wouldnt even finish.
I have tried copying in safe mode and cleaning registry. Tonight I will try to defrag. I have tried it but the "Scanning and repairing" stuck at 31% for over 30 minutes, so I will try to leave it over night and see what happens. Do you have any other suggestions what else could I try?
System info:
OS: Windows 8 Pro 64bit
RAM: 4GB
CPU: Intel Core i3 530 @ 2.93GHz

Thank you very much in case of reply.

Hi

Defraging a damaged hard disk is a very bad idea i would try to cancell it as it risks loosing data if disk is dying

Are you sure you are talking about one hard drive with two partitions or two hard drives with one partition each

Eg 2 x 250 GB partitions on 500GB disk drive or two x 500GB disks

If one disk i would remove it and put in a usb tray and connect to another pc
Then run westerndigital datalifeguard for windows to test the hard drive.

It looks like the d: partition ( or hard drive) has lots of bad sectors making it hard to read.

If data is realy important consider going to an data recovery expert to recover the important data as the more you attempt to recover data the more damage you are likely to be doing

its nothing to do with registry or spy or software , your hard drive needle ( pin ) inside is damged get your ear close to the pc or maybe get the hard drive out and shake it near your ear you wil hear the nois.

if i was u get new hard drive and ,with the damaged hard drive u have copy files 1 by 1 important data only , 1by1 copy is more success then copying all at once.

Okay, I have already ordered a SSD, which I will use for Windows. In that case I won't defrag. And yes it IS one hard drive with 2 partitions. I will copy the files even if it will take long, if it will go well I will format it. Unfortunately I cannot afford a data recovery expert.
Will it make a difference if I use for example Total Commander instead of windows explorer?
Thank you for your answers

the disc is a hardware and no software can help doing what you need for example if default explorer dont work , this dont mean other software needs to get involved in able to recover it dont work this way with hardware , if something is dieing , best action is to backup and bin it simple as that.

if i was you i will copy file 1 by 1 all important data , if you have movies just ignore then u can re get them again from were ever u got them from just save the important bit.

also you mentioned when copying a file you have 0mb this means this part of the setor of the disk is damaged.

damaged hdd can be caused by pc being knocked around , accidental kicking the base , dropped hdd , the pin inside is fragile this is the part that reads the disc.

copy important files and get rid of it , dont bother with softwares , and data recovery exports they just there to eat your money , they will do the same process as you will do , if you had to send that hdd to a company and if they did bother to open it they may beable to fix it by opening replacing parts , this is how police recovers data from damaged hdd.

1: copy
2:backup importants
3: bin it and move on

Thank you for your answer. What about uploading to cloud? it seems that it works at normal speed. And it wasnt kicked or anything (I am sure), it is a desktop PC and it is never moved.

I mean uploading the important files to a site like dropbox (upload files and download them on other drive). It is going like my normal upload speed, which is okay (a lot faster than copying from D). What do you think? Is it okay for the HDD health?

well if your trying to copy the files from the damage files to dropbox or other server it will basicly cause the same problem or upload failed.

the hard drive is died mate , best thing i told u is to copy file 1 by 1 this way the pc has less stress on your hard drive.

if you select multipul files its like grabing handfull of data all together then next check how much data have you got on your hands , so this then tries to check your hard drive tries to access all parts of the hard drive all in 1 go this is when the clogging starts to happen and you end up wasitng your time.

copy files 1 by 1 you have 100% transfer rate this is because the hdd is reading from 1 part of your hdd rather then the enitre disk , this way the process is fast , depending on how much files u want to back up , just save much as u can , maybe try 2 files at a time and increase , work your way se how much your hdd can handle upto , copy 1 file first then try 2 next then so on till u get problems

I managed to copy all files (some went very very slow, some of them I uploaded to cloud (interesting it worked)). But thanks for the answers. By the way, the drive was a 7 year old Hitachi :D
