Airflow or static pressure fans as intake in fractal design define s?

Hey, i want to add a fan in my fractal design define s in front as intake. That case has some limited vents in front and that air has to be sucked from the sides. Also, it has a dust filter, so im wondering if i should get a static pressure fan or if an airflow one will do better?

Solution

The vents are of no importance, the real obstruction is the dust filter behind them. That's what high static pressure is good for - keep air moving even when filters are less than perfectly clean.
I got away with the stock fans in several builds. unless you have something inside the case that will be dumping abnormal amounts of heat, I would just go for regular air flow fans. it does not seem like those small vents limit the air flow much, so extra suction would not do much.

And even freshly cleaned filters still have a fair amount of flow resistance due to the mesh being so fine. Unless you clean them weekly, dust will quickly make the resistance much worse.

(Due to how much I dislike having to pull my 300v2 out from under my desk to remove the PSU filter and open the case to unclip the front cover to access the front filters, I only clean my filters about once every 2-3 months... which reminds me that I am overdue.)

i will probably not clean the filters very often cause im lazy, and also my room tends to be quite dusty. Do you know if the fractal design stock fans are static pressure? If so, then maybe i should put them both in front as intake and buy one good airflow fan to put as exhaust in the rear?

edit: should i also get another static pressure fan in front? How much do you think it would improve my cpu:s and gpu:s temperatures? Ive also heard its better to have possitive pressure in the case to keep dust away

I prefer positive pressure too. I have never cleaned the inside of my 300v2 in three years, only the filters every few months, and there is hardly any dust in the case apart from a light coat on top of the HDDs. Air loses too much velocity shortly after passing through the fan that it settles there instead of rising through the case.

So do you think this is a good setup: both stock fans + another static pressure fan in front, and one airflow fan as exhaust? or does the hexagon mesh in the rear obstruct enough to get a static pressure fan or maybe something inbetween?

ok, but still, would an ariflow fan be better as exhaust?

It is not worth obsessing over. I'd say 'a' fan is required. Just about any fan will do, it is merely giving positive pressure and natural convection a little push.

If you put a high volume fan on the exhaust, you may end up with negative pressure due to the exhaust trying to pull more air out of the case than the high static pressure fans are managing to pull through the filters.

hmm, alright. I guess im just gonna get a cheap, bang-for-the-buck fan as exhaust then. Thanks for helping InvalidError, now i know what to get
