Do i need an optical drive to play pc games on disc

My internet sucks and i wont be doing any downloading, so i was wondering if i need an optical drive to play games on disc.

... but the disk is only used to install the game and possibly to allow it to start due to a disk check for pirating deterrent. Once the game is loaded, most don't need the disk in the drive anymore.
