Hi everyone

I have built a new PC just recently and haven't done any stress testing up until tonight. I ran the OCCT and prime 95(full heat option selected) and I gotta admit that the temperature of my i7 6700k @ full load are a little scary.

check out this screenshot :

cputempsprime95.PNG

the third column with Max temps that you can see on the screenshot come from 60 seconds of running prime 95 with the "full heat" option selected. When I was stress testing with OCCT the highest temp was around 86C after around 2 minutes(100% cpu usage).

I am using a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO cooler and I am just wondering that maybe I have put too little thermal paste onto the CPU ?

Sceenshot below is presents the idle temps

It is worth noting that my room is quite warm and this PC is under a desk where i think the hot air might me accumulating

I was playing GTA 5 for around 1h and the highest temperature that I have noticed was around 65C (however the max load on the CPU was 50%). Therefore it is only on full load when the temperatures are rising to that 96C or maybe more however i stopped the test to avoid damaging the component.

If you can, please let me know if I should do something about those temperate and also what could be the cause of such high temps ?

full config

i7 6700k
NZXT H440
gtx 970
Corsair RM 650W

regards
Rob

hi thanks for quick reply.

I am not sure if the air flow is any good. I am using the stock fans that came with the h440 and haven't added any additional fans. Maybe I could try to put the pc in a different place other than under my desk.

I could be too much paste, it could be that you need to reseat your block. Make sure your fans are not blocked and facing the proper direction, etc.

Or realistically, that cooler probably can't handle the CPU TDW at load.

I would dismantle the cooler and try reapplying more paste. Everybody is scared of putting paste now. If you think you didnt use enough you are probably right. It is probably badly seated, too much or too little paste. The airflow in that case is not THAT bad. I have the same cpu and cooler and my load temps in p95 are below 80.

Yeah I know this is a very budget cooler and maybe not the best for the high end CPU like 6700k however I was not planning on overclocking for now therefore i went with this one.

I will remove the heat sink tomorrow and apply less thermal paste and see what happens

Thanks for the reply.

Tomorrow I will take a photo of how much paste I've applied and Ill post it here.

See this: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2557021/prime95-test-question.html

Do NOT run any versions of Prime95 later than 26.6. Here's why:

Core i 2nd, 3rd and 4th Generation CPU's have AVX (Advanced Vector Extension) instruction sets. Recent versions of Prime95, such as 28.5, run AVX code on the Floating Point Unit (FPU) math coprocessor, which produces extremely high temperatures. The FPU test in the stability testing utility AIDA64 shows the same results.

Prime95 v26.6 produces temperatures on 3rd and 4th Generation processors more consistent with 2nd Generation, which also have AVX instructions, but do not suffer from thermal extremes due to having a soldered Integrated Heat Spreader and a 35% larger Die.

Please download Prime95 version 26.6 - http://windows-downloads-center.blogspot.com/2011/04/pr...

Run only Small FFT’s for 10 minutes.

Use only Real Temp to measure your Core temperatures, as it was designed specifically for Intel processors: Real Temp - http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2089/real-temp-3-7...

Your Core temperatures will test 10 to 20C lower with v26.6 than with v28.5.

Please read this Tom’s Sticky: Intel Temperature Guide - http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1800828/intel-temp...

Thanks,

CT :sol:

Hi everyone

Ok, so I have replaced the thermal paste but its hard to tell if the temperatures are any better. I can run OCCT test for around 2 minutes and then it stops with a warning message that one of the cores has exceed the maximum temp of 85C.

Here is the photo of how the paste looked like when I've removed the heatsink

And this is how I applied the new paste:

I really dont know what can be done to reduce the temperature of this cpu. Maybe I should consider adding the second fan to the heatsink ?
