If I upgraded my Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83 GHz from 32 bit Windows 7 to 64 bit then I could maximize my RAM at 16 GB (now 8Gb but 32 bit only uses 3Gb). This would be relatively inexpensive but is this CPU worth upgrading or is there too little head room to make it worthwhile?

I want to use this computer for playing virtual instruments (VSTis etc.) and forrecording music. With it set up in 64 bit Windows 7 and 16Gb of RAM it would be maxed out and does it have enough processing power to make the $200-$300 expenditure worthwhile? (A new comparable rack computer might cost at least $1000 since my current one has 4 large hard drives.)

My question is really about the throughput capacity of my Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83 GHz running in Windows 7 64 bit with 16 GB of RAM? Does this processor with a maximum RAM of 16Gb have a lifespan such that the expenditure is worthwhile?

Certainly running it at 32 bit with only 3 Gb usable is now limiting what I can install and run as a virtual instrument. Will 64 bit upgrading and the RAM increasing to 16Gb give me good throughput and headroom or is the improvement only marginal or in some other way not worthwhile?

I don't know, I don't do that kind of work with my computer. But, why not take the incremental step and do the OS upgrade with the 8GB RAM you have to be able to fully utilize it. It costs less to do just the OS upgrade than it does to buy RAM and do the OS upgrade.

Thank you Kanewolf for replying to my question. However, my question is whether while using my current computer with a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Processor at @ 2.83 GHZ and by switching from Windows 7 32-bit to 64-bit and by replacing the 8GB (4 X 2GB) with a fresh set of RAM 16GB (4X 4GB) will I get a significant increase in throughput and whether there is enough processing power gains to make this CPU upgrade viable. My interests are in realtime virtual instrument playing, software synthesers and soound modules and digital music recording. I hope this clarifies my question and my objectives.

If you have 8gb of ram, get x64. Otherwise, you are wasting money for extra ram. A Q9550 will not beat any new i5 or i7, but it still is a decent processor. 16gb would help, and a better graphics card can always help. $200-$300 is enough to get a older i5 system (Second or third gen) like a Dell Optiplex 790, or to build a 6th gen i3 system (that's also under the assumption that you aren't overly insane about gaming)
