I got a few motherboards today that had some processors already mounted onto the motherboard. I removed the heatsinks and looked up the processors as a comparison on cpuboss. I want to change them into gaming pc's but my question here would be which of the two processors would be better for gaming? It looks like the Athlon II x4 650 beats the core 2 duo with more cores, is this a correct assumption? What I mean is, would these extra cores benefit me for playing low to medium-intensive games like the sims and such? I intend to use a gtx 650 for a graphics card until I upgrade to the 1080 on my main rig, in which case I'll swap out the 960 I have in there now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would probably go with the Athlon II X4 650. Even if the games you play are not well threaded, the faster clock speed of the Athlon II quad core will win out. Plus the 4 cores will be superior for other more heavily threaded apps and games. Dual cores with 2 threads and low IPC are not much good for gaming anymore. Especially if you game on a busy server with lots O other players.

I don't play that game, but I have had several Intel duo cores from that era and plenty of Athlon II X4s. The Athlon II X4s always performed slightly better... for me.

The AMD is more likely the better performer in most titles, Even older stuff that is more single core centric. More than just game titles benefit from cores. Drivers, and Core OS features benefit highly from not running on the game primary thread.
