I recently bought a used i5-2500K. I installed the CPU, put a pea-sized dot of thermal past in the middle, and mounted the stock Intel heatsink. Loaded up the BIOS and restored default settings. Booted into Windows and noticed that it was idling around 40-45 degrees and spiked to about 60 (with only Google Chrome open.) Since then, I've tried multiple times to reapply thermal paste and remount the cooler, and change BIOS settings and it's only gotten worse since then. My last boot it was overheated to 100 degrees as soon as I turned the system on. What could be the problem?
