Supersoph_WD - - the free Nero software is supposed to be on the drive itself (I've checked up on this just to be sure).

So if the OP partitions & formats the drive he will lose the free software that's supposed to be on it.

External hard drives are supplied already partitioned & formatted anyway in my experience, as indeed they would have to be if they come with software on them.
Welcome, davpo333!

If it's a brand new external drive, you should first go to Disk Management in Windows and check if the HDD is properly recognized there. It should appear as Unallocated volume with a black bar. Afterwards, you'd need to initialize it and then - partition & format it. This should make the hard drive visible for your system through My Computer/ This PC and to the software that comes with it.

Hope it helps. Keep us posted and give us more details, if we have misunderstood your problem.

My bad, @Philip Corcoran! I wasn't aware of that software but I did just research it myself. ( Should have checked it before posting, though :/) Thank you for the correction!

I guess @davpo333 could probably try using a different USB cable or a different computer altogether, to see if the external HDD will pop up then. Updating the PC/laptop's USB drivers might also help.
