Hello my fellow beautiful tommers.
I recently accidently let my cpu go up to 99 degrees, I then instantly opened the case and exited all games. Since then my cpu has begun to easily rise to 85-95 degrees under load.

I've come to the conclusion that it has nothing to do with the airflow or cpu fan.
I suspect that either I kinda fried the cpu even though it still fully works, or the thermal paste got bad if something like that is possible. Oh and cpu fan is fairly new, while the cpu being a few years old (i5-2400).

Heres also a pic of the thermal paste, reckon it's enough? It came pre applied and was covering perfectly before removal. There's also a bit remaining on the cpu fan.

Thanks in advance,
Fellow human

Solution
Every time you take the cooler off and replace it, you need to clean off all the old thermal paste and apply new paste for good cooling. (OK, I sometimes will use existing paste if I put it on half an hour or less ago)

Good contact and heat transfer is essential. It requires good paste and proper use of it.

well what is you CPU cooler? I don't see that :/
that could be the cause of everything. if its the stock one it would be one of the pins came loose and lost contact.
also clean the HSF and dust it, make sure the fan spins and works

It's an aftermarket cooler, I don't really remember the name, it is screwed tightly on though and I have reassembled the fan, it works perfectly, but I still get instant 85+ degree temps under load.

Anytime you lift the cpu cooler off of the cpu you MUST clean all the old thermal paste off and reapply. And you must reapply the paste and set the heat sink correctly as well. When you lift the heat sink off the cpu you creat tiny air bubbles in the paste, this prevents the cooler from actually making contact to the cpu, which is turn prevents heat transfer.

Go buy some 90% or greater alcohol or order a cleaning kit to clean the cpu and heat sink. A typical method to apply the new paste is put a " pea sized" drop right in the middle of the cpu then placed the heatsink on with out lifting it back up. There's plenty of videos you can find to guid you through this procedure with a quick google search.
