Hi everyone,
I'm building a cheap gaming PC for a friend, and I just thought of this now: is the psu good enough for the GPU? The power supply I was looking at is here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438012&cm_re=500w_psu-_-17-438-012-_-Product

And the full specs are are follows:

Core 2 Quad Q9650 3.0GHz
HD 5970
8GB of DDR2 RAM
500GB HDD
Intel DG43GT Motherboard
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO cooler

Will the PSU handle this load without exploding? And if not, what units should I look at instead? Thanks.

Solution
no you should look at a quality 600-6650w instead. look for EVGA 650 G2, GS, or GQ, or Antec PSU, or a seasonic S12II 620. also why did you choose that card? you could go better with a HD 7850/70. that's what I would use minimum, as I would choose a used GTX 680 or used 7950/70 instead.
Great site for PSU wattage requirements

Thanks, and I chose the HD 5970 because I've had excellent experiences with the HD 5000 series before, but thanks for the tip.

when you way "excellent expierence" do you mean by performance or reliability? reliability comes in brand. performance comes in better architecture and newer models. even if you may have had good quality stuff, it doesn't mean only the series is good. I would go get something performs better. also a better match for cpu
