Hi all.
My Cable modem/router has only two ethernet ports. It's new for me, and I figured I'd just add a switch and all would be well to hookup (PC, Printers, etc.).
Internet speed and 'response' is horribly slow through the switches, often with pages timing out.
I set the DNS to 8.8.8.8, little if any change. I think it's maybe the gigabit switches negotiating, etc.
Out of shear curiousity I grabbed my old Linksys DWRT55G router, and used it as a 4-port switch (10/100). Internet was snappy again, and I get decent 55mbps speedtest results.
Is the answer to buy OLD gear for switches!? I'm hoping to HTPC with all gigabit stuff.
My router/modem is a Netgear N600 C3700
The gigabit switches I tried out and purchased are:
Rosewill 8-port 10/100/1000
TP-Link 5- port 10/100/1000
D-Link 24 port 10/100/1000
Netgear 8-port 10/100/1000 (thought maybe it was a brand thing - borrowed)
All cables are CAT 6.
When I simply remove the switch and insert a coupler, my internet is wonderful. However, I still have a new 24 port switch I'd like to use with the internet.
What can I do? I even considered getting another router based on a lone similar problem I googled that was resolved, by going to a new router.
