One of my GPU Dual Fan stops spinning after booting

Hi, I'm using MSI GTX 650 Ti Boost for almost 3 years without any problem.
Recently I have just cleaned up dusts form inside my PC, then noticed something odd. When I turned on my PC both of my GPU fans are spinning, just a couple seconds later one of them stopped while the other one keeps spinning. I don't know whether its broken or not because it managed to spin smoothly even for just a couple of seconds.

So I tried to look for some answers, I also read similar cases like mine but they didn't mention how many fans the have on their GPU or how many fans that stopped spinning. And some answers just say that the GPU fan needs a replacement.

I got this from yo*tube, using MSI Afterburner I set my fan speed manually above 85% then my other fan starts spinning, below 85% it will stop spinning again. Some says that this is a GPU fan faulty and some says that it is a normal behavior of GPU. Because if I'm not mistaken, the first time I installed my GPU on my PC both of the fans were spinning regardless of the temperature or the fan speed settings.

So again, is this a GPU fan faulty or is it a normal GPU behavior? I just need to make sure so I know what to do with my GPU.
Thanks

The card's dual fans are PWM, temperature controlled. However no fan control exists during the boot process whether it by CPU cooler, GPU cooler or even CPU / GPU power control as all of these are "windows based". Your CPU may downclock to 800 Mhz in windows but while booting, or when in BIOS, it will be at rated speed. The power control functions exist only in windows.

And spinning would not be an indicator either as spinning at 400 rpm is very different from spinning at 1200 rpm.

I would guess this is a bearing issue. Replacing a fan is not a big thing.... but finding the right fan maybe.
MSI introduced passive mode cooling back in 2008, with Asus and other manufacturers joining in this year. here's a description of the feature on the 970.

Like the ASUS card, the GTX 970 Gaming 4G features a semi-passive mode, which it calls Zero Frozr. It's something MSI first brought to the market in 2008 (it's keen to clarify that it hasn't copied the ASUS Strix cards here). The temperature cut-off points are similar to the ASUS card – between 60 and 65°C, the fans will spin up; once the GPU drops to about 50°C, they're no longer needed. This carries benefits for noise production, efficiency and fan lifespan.

Another feature is called Hybrid Frozr, and this refers to the ability to control both fans independently. Enabling this functionality is a six-pin fan header on the PCB. In automatic mode, one fan is controlled by the GPU temperature while the other is controlled by temperature measurement ICs dotted around the PCB. MSI claims it can result in a 1.9dB(A) noise reduction, and also offers users the ability to control the two fans independently using its Gaming App.

We normally are not involved in builds below a x70 series card so I can't speak to having any knowledge with respect to this model. I do not think this feature was included on MSI's 6xx series cards but it is something tou should inquire about just ti make sure.

Also note that in MSI's 6xx series designs, the fans spin up in reverse to blow out dust at startup, then stop and start in the normal direction. The fans are PWM controlled and it certainly could be the case that the card is just not getting hot enough to require usage. I'd give MSI a call and ask what's what in your particular model.

Too bad my GPU warranty is already expired :(

Yes, I think I should give MSI a call. But if it is really broken, is it possible to take my GPU to a MSI repair/service center and have it repaired or do they only do RMAs? Note: my warranty is already expired. Because I don't trust myself to repair it on my own..

This is normal. You see the fans are temp controlled. It will only spin when the card reaches near max temperature. I would suggest running a stress test like Furmark and do a 100% load test. See if the fans spin when cards heat up or not. If both fans spin at high tems then everything is fine and your fans are temp controlled. If not then one fan is faulty. Hope it helps :)

i think this card is not temperature controlled, because op mentioned this..."Because if I'm not mistaken, the first time I installed my GPU on my PC both of the fans were spinning regardless of the temperature or the fan speed settings."...
however if he is wrong...then temperature control is certainly the case...

Yes, it may be like that. So I decided to bring my GPU to the nearest MSI Service Center this weekend to get my fans replaced since they said that they still have the compatible fans available. I will also request for a thorough check on my GPU just to make sure that bad fan condition are the cause of the problem. Wish me luck :D

Hi guys,

Yesterday I took my GPU to the nearest MSI Service Center, and indeed the problem was one of the fans is already in a bad condition (they didn't explain the details) and so they replaced both of the fans (can't replace just one because both of them share the same wire to the GPU). Now both of my fans are working again, and I got lower temperature than before while idle or gaming.

And last I wanted to say thanks for helping me out :D
