I bought a Seagate Barracuda 3TB ST3000DM001 with my computer 2 years ago, but only just realized that it is only letting me use 2tb of it. I was wondering if there was a way to get that extra 1tb without losing the data that is already on it?

Also, I have seen some threads about the questionable quality of this drive, should I look for another to back all my data onto?

Solution
To get over 2TB, it needs to be partitioned as a GPT drive. You can do this in disk manager but you will lose everything on the drive.
If it is just a data drive, you will have to move your data somewhere else to fix it.
If it is your boot drive, you'll need to image it or reinstall Windows.
You need Windows 7 64-bit or later to boot from a GPT disk.
