I have tried to boot my PC up today and all of a sudden i get funny characters and symbols after on the second page (after the ASUS logo).

I have not seen any abnormalities prior to this, i had a long gaming and work session yesterday with nothing abnormal to note. This just occurred today. So far i just reset the batteries, set everything to default menu on boot options but to no avail.

My system: I7 4930k, 16gb DDR3 ram, Asus X79 deluxe, GTX 980

Thanks for your reply.

Do you mean try it with one ram stick? (I have two 4gb and one 8gb stick on in X79 board)

Not sure how to boot it up without the GPU, Have nothing to connect my monitor into.

Cheers

That does not look good.

See if you can access the bios of the motherboard.
Have a look to see if the txt and options in the bios along with the menu are also corrupted with random lettering and caricatures.

If you find it to be the case it can often mean that the graphics card you have, has suffered from damage to either the Gpu.
But with random caricatures on screen at he post or in the bios it relates to bad graphics memory on the graphics card.

Or it means in some way you have a weak solder joint on the underside of the GPU or memory chips causing the problem.

It often happens when the card has been used for hours.
And becomes hot when gaming.
And then the system is turned off cooling right down.

If the video card has a secondary bios on it, there will be a switch on the GTX 980 card.
Turn the system off, and move the switch over to use the other bios.

If it resolves the random symbols or caricatures you see at posting or when you enter the bios.
It tells you that the bios firmware of the first bios rom on the GTX 980 card has been corrupted in some way.

Without the bios working correctly on the card the system will sometimes refuse to boot because the card is not identifying it`s self to the bios of the motherboard.

So it halts just like what you have posted in the picture.

If any of the tips above fail to fix the problem.
Then your going to have to send the card back because it has developed a problem due to heat, and as I said possibly bad solder joints on the card pertaining to the Gpu or the memory chips of the card.

Okay i took one ram stick out so I have two 4gb sticks, the setup I had since 2014.

After booting i get this.

I had that coming up sometimes before but it always booted up fine after that. I went to Bios setting and clicked default then save, and then when it rebooted the same screen (with random characters) came up again

I have tried to install Windows again using a USB. I went to boot option in to load up the USB, I had tried boot up the USB from boot menu, wrongly probably and this came up.

Please note that the USB was not formatted properly. After doing so, i managed boot windows from my USB and get through the install it.

Just worried about the coloured patch though on this screenshot. I dont get that kind of artefact any more though
