On an AMD R290, you want to stick to 1080p. The card is simply not powerful enough to run games smoothly at 1440p.

^^^Go for the 144hz monitor, its a massive step up from 60hz and you'll see a huge difference in racing or FPS games.
Your 290 probably won't push 1440p. At that price point you can either get a good looking 1080p panel, and not worry about fps, or get a low end 1440p display, and drop some settings. It's also up to you, if you want a good looking display or a fast refresh display. You can get either at that price point.
