Hey guys! This is my first forum post, and I'm fairly new to this site.

My question is exactly what it is in the title. I want to upgrade to accompany my gtx 980 that I'm going to be purchasing soon. I do play a quite a lot of demanding games and I want to know if this is a reasonable upgrade for my computer. Or if my corrent processor is good enough.

I bought this computer when I was on a budget, so here are my current specs:

PC Specs

CPU
FX-8320@ 4.1Ghz

CPU Cooler
CM 212 plus (push)

Motherboard
MSI 970A-G46

Graphics Card
Sapphire R9 270x Dual-x

RAM
Corsair Vengeance (2x4gb) @ 1600mhz

Power Supply
Corsair CX 500

Hard Drives
Seagate 1TB
Hitachi 250GB for photos
Samsung 160gb for photos

Monitors
One Samsung S22E310 @ 1920x1080
One Dell E176FP @ 1280x1024

OS
Windows 10

EDIT: I may upgrade my CPU Cooler to a H100i or something similar. Any recommendations?

You shouldn't have to reinstall Windows 10, however in the worse case you may have to do a clean install of the OS, which is good to do once in a while anyway. Really though you shouldn't have to do a clean install unless you are upgrading your motherboard.

With that said I would highly suggest upgrading to the FX 8370 instead of the FX 9590. The FX 8370 is 125W TDP and is a lot easier on a system than the huge 220W TDP FX 9590. The FX 8370 can usually be overclocked to 5Ghz+ giving you better performance than the FX 9590.

With your motherboard I wouldn't suggest upgrading to the FX 9590. I usually recommend a 990FX motherboard to anyone wanting to run the 220W FX 9590.

Your current motherboard will likely catch fire if you try to run a 9590 on it. Your current cpu cooler is also inadequate, so you will need a high dollar motherboard and a big expensive cooler of you get a 9590 and for what that is going to cost you can usually get an i5 which is a much better cpu and won't be a bottleneck when you decide you need a gpu upgrade. The extra power draw and heat created by a 9590 is also likely to put that poor CX(poor capacitors) into an early grave. A motherboard swap is likely going to require an OS reinstall. If its an OEM copy of windows a call to Microsoft for activation and worst case scenario you will need to buy a new license.

+1 Best processor upgrade for OPs rig would be the FX 8370, or even better the FX 8370E. With a CM 212 the OP should be able to get a mild to mid range overclock. I was able to get 4.8Ghz with a Hyper 212 EVO and FX 8370, however every processor overclocks differently. The OP should still get very good performance with a FX 8370(E). I run all the latest games including Fallout 4 on all Ultra settings 1080P 60FPS+ with my FX 8370.

I definitely agree that the 9590 isn;t a good choice right now, especially when AMD are about to release their ZEN CPUs, but I wouldn't be so dramatic to say that ur board will catch fire.. That being said, 9590 does definitely run very hot..

To answer your question, YOU DO NOT -- repeat DO NOT need to re-install OS when upgrading ur CPU.. Any microcode and drivers you need to update will get detected by the OS and get updated if you have "Automatic Driver updates" enabled.. You might need to update your BIOS however..

Another thing you might want to do is confirm that the current 500W PSU is enough for your config.. Here's the PSU calculator link: Never mind, I calculated the power reqd for ur PC and it is coming to 495 Watts for 8-hrs usage... So u might want to upgrade the PSU as well.. see link below...

http://outervision.com/b/oQ7ats

My suggestion..

1. make sure "Automatic Driver Updates" are enabled -- Right click Start -> System -> Advanced System Settings -> Hardware -> Device Installation Settings -> select "Always install best driver from Windows Update"..

2. Go to the BIOS update page for the MSI 970A-G46:

https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/970AG46.html#down-utility&Win8%2064

3. Install the CPU and cooler with preferably a better PSU, 650 Watt should be safe headroom..

Inspite of all the simple steps above, I would sincerely suggest waiting for AMD ZEN before upgrading, 'cos at the moment it is not worth upgrading to the 9590.. The skylake i5-6500/6600/i7-6700 is much much better..

Best wishes. :))

I agree in concept with what your saying, however if the OP upgrades to either Intel Skylake or Zen they will have to upgrade their RAM, motherboard, and processor. If the OP is looking for a good upgrade on a budget their best bet is to upgrade to the FX 8370 or FX 8370E. The 500W psu should also be sufficient with going to a 125W FX 8370 or 95W FX 8370E. The OPs psu isn't the best as pointed out the CX series Corsair doesn't have the best components, however the FX 8370(E) will be much easier on the psu than the 220W FX 9590.

I was not being dramatic when I said the motherboard could catch fire.

And that was on a board with a better vrm setup.

Really surprised to see that.. no kidding but that could be a one-off.. couldn't it?? AFAIK never doubting that the 9590 is a very poor-choice indeed, its not setting PCs on fire on a regular basis...

Your motherboard doesn't support the FX-9590, I am not sure what will happen if you install it, but it might catch fire since it's a higher wattage than the other FX series CPUS.
If you are planning to buy a new motherboard just for the 9590, stop right now, because that CPU is based on a very old architecture and has very low IPC.
What I'd suggest is an intel build that would outperform the 9590 by almost double, for the same price.
Also, you can overclock this CPU, with your cooler, probably not much, but with a better cooler, this can go high.
I would also suggest you change your PSU.

EDIT: It's not worth upgrading to FX-8370, you may not even notice the performance benefits. You could probably overclock your CPU to reach the FX-8370.
