My friend has an fx-8320 with the stock cooler. After about 4-5 minutes after boot time, the computer totally freezes. He is running windows 10 and has never overclocked. When investigating the CPU socket, the heatsink is pumping out air and is at very high rpms. There is also quite a bit of heat off the CPU even though it is just after booting and at idle. We checked the thermal compound and it does seem a bit worn but shouldn't be a huge problem. All ideas and solutions are accepted. Thanks!

First off, Random errors like freezing could be attributed to either Software errors -- Malware, corrupted settings etc.. as well as hardware.. If booting with, for example a Linux Ubuntu DVD/USB eliminates errors, you can definitely say it is an OS issue.. Checking/cleaning malware -- or at best reinstalling OS should solve everything..

But even if a Ubuntu boot is unstable & causes errors, the Hardware -- probably high temps should be the first thing to check.. If Getting a better cpu cooler/new thermal paste cannot mitigate it, I would try to re-assemble the PC from scratch to see if any of the components like RAM had gotten loose... sometimes CPUs also go kaput, even though it is quite rare..

The Fx-series is very notorious for...

The Fx-series is very notorious for high temps and in all probability, that's what is.. :))
