Ok, so I'm upgrading from a single 270x.

I'm also not concerned with running games at the absolute pinnacle of graphics intensity. I want games to run smoothly, and I don't want to have to worry about upgrading for about 2, maybe 3 years. I built my current system on a budget, and I'm very.... fiscally minded.... when it comes to purchasing. lol Also, I'm in Canada.

Some details;
Gigabyte UD3 990FX V4.0 mobo
12GB PC3-14900
725W Cooler Master EX2 PSU
FX-9370 CPU
Samsung 840 EVO 128GB for the OS
Samsung 850 EVO 500GB for the games
ASUS R9 270X 2gb for the vroom vroom

System's.... 3? years old.... need to upgrade the vid card IMO.... wouldn't mind replacing the x2 2gb sticks with x2 8gb sticks, (24gb total) but I want to do the video card first.

What I'm considering;

R9 390 - 8gb is nice, will load all textures well (I'm doing 1080p gaming btw, no interest in 2k or 4k atm) I'm looking @ $400ish + tax.

R9 290x 4gb- some nice factory refurbs for decent prices, $250-300 + tax

970 GTX - Feels weird using an AMD CPU and Nvidia GPU, but I'd consider it. Doesn't seem like the best bang for buck.... but I'll hear arguments.

Crossfire 280x - Buy 2 of them, and rock Crossfire - can get them for about $180-200 a piece..... I know about the issues with Xfire, and I know some games don't support. Still seems interesting, 6gb total VRAM, and x2 GPU's is appealing.

Crossfire 270x - I have one, can get a second factory refurb for $130. Def the cheapest option, but I'd like to hear from current Xfire users, on how it works with most games. Is micro stuttering really that bad? Does it happen all the time? 6Gb total, the card I'm looking at is 4gb, where mine is 2gb. I really WANT to like this option, but I'm thinking a single card might be better.

So many options, I want to spend as little as possible, but I want to be ready for 2+ years of gaming. I appreciate all opinions, and thanks for reading this ridiculously long post. lol

CFis not an option, with your cpu you need to stick to a single card

for 1080p the gtx 970 would be the best option

hilariously nvidia cards help amd cpu's run better

you really do need an intel cpu to get full performance from the higher end amd gpu's

also limited by your pretty terrible power supply

Thanks for the reply.

I actually bought another 270x, but a 4gb card. It was only $130. Tripled my VRAM, not the best solution - but the cheapest. And if the game I want to play doesn't support Xfire, at least I've got x2 the VRAM I did before. lol

My PSU is a POS. Any recommendations on a decent <$100~ PSU to replace this one? :D

No I did not, what? Buy a 4gb card? Triple my VRAM?

Why would my 4gb card not use the other 2gb of VRAM? I know it will scale down memory speed, and clock speed, but why wouldn't I get to use the other 2gb?

Thanks.

Oh no... You've messed up. From what I recall, having multiple GPUs makes use of the smallest VRAM as it essencially copies the same data from one GPU VRAM to the other thus making the extra 2GB obsolete.

Ugh, ok after doing some reading I see you're correct. (Not surprised)

It appears that DX12 and Mantle allow VRAM stacking with some games..... not tghe best for old games, but newer games SHOULD support stacking VRAM.... no?

that's good, a powerful single card is the way to go

>.> be aware you have a pretty terrible power supply, that particular model is not a true 725w unit and is built with crap components

you might have issues when you install the 390

New system; (kinda)

24gb 1866mhz PC3-14900
FX-9370 4.4ghz - Antec water cooling
840 EVO for OS
850 EVO for games
EVGA 1000W modular Gold rated PSU
MSI R9 390
Gigabyte 990FX UD3 R4.0

Should keep me gaming for a while at least!
