99% Disk Usage

My computer hard drive use to run at 0% to 3% disk in task manager at idle. But recently my computer was updating windows and preparing to shutdown when the power strip that it was plugged into was turned off. I loaded up my computer and checkEd all the parts and the only thing I noticed was my hard drive. At idle in task manager the disk was 66% to 99% and only one program was really using any thing, it was using 2.4 MB/s and that was 99% then it dropped to 0.4 MB/s and ran at 66% while idle. Sometimes it hopped back up to 99%. Is my hard drive damaged or can this be fixed? I just recently finished building this computer two weeks ago maybe three and don't exactly enjoy the fact that my "baby" could potentially be hurt.

PS. This is my first gaming computer build ever!

Congrats on your first build and I hope your 'baby' will be already, once you swap the SATA cable and the SATA port where the HDD is connected to. Hopefully, this will fix the disk usage. Unfortunately, the power strip could potentially have done some damage as well, so I'd suggest you test the hard drive using its manufacturer's brand-specific diagnostic tool to check up on the health and SMART status. You can also refer to some third-party testing tool suggestions from the community.

Another thing you should check is your motherboard's official website and make sure you have the latest updates for the SATA controller & Chipset drivers.

Congrats on your first build and I hope your 'baby' will be already, once you swap the SATA cable and the SATA port where the HDD is connected to. Hopefully, this will fix the disk usage. Unfortunately, the power strip could potentially have done some damage as well, so I'd suggest you test the hard drive using its manufacturer's brand-specific diagnostic tool to check up on the health and SMART status. Another thing you should check is your motherboard's official website and make sure you have the latest updates for the SATA controller & Chipset drivers.

Since your rig is relatively new, you should be able to RMA failed hardware components, once you get in touch with the manufacturer's/reseller's support.

So the first two are when I first booted up and its using alot of Disk, then the second two are a little later. It continues to use alot of Disk... Here and there it will go to real low usage but then it jumps back to really high usage. System seems to use a ton in task manager. I'm going to try a third party testing tool as you suggested, first I'll back my stuff up.
