ok.. I built my first computer 2 years ago.. a 4670k with a 780i gtx and 8 gigs of ripjaws

My son now wants a computer and I have a couple questions on his needs

Parameters

- He basically uses it for playing League of Legends which i no big deal to build, but he also does alot of video edits for VINE. Now I am not sure how intensive these are, but I know video editing can be taxing. These are the programs he uses

Sony Vegas and Camtasia Studio 8

One I want to learn - Adobe After Effects, Final Cut Pro X

Plugins I use - Newblue FX, Sapphire Pluggins, Twixtor Pro

Plugins I want - ReelSmart Motion Blur

Recording software I use - Screen -o- Matic

I am trying to see what I need to do to get him this ability for cheapest obviously possible..

Part of me thinks about giving him my computer, but I am not sure an i5 with only 8 gigs of ram can handle that.

Anyone tell me what I am looking to spend and what I need to look for component wise for something that does his requests?

Solution
That's sort of simple, say NO and if you catch again, then NO computer period. That he's not allowed to do it and you will be monitoring him, so it's HIS option, if he wants to use/have a computer that it's not acceptable. Makes no sense to get/give a computer if he's just going to load it up with problems like malware and virus's. Can set up a separate account for him on your computer, password protected so you can closer monitor what's used/added

well.. there in lies the problem. I try to stop him, but he is horrible about using cracked software and downloading bloatware.

I am constantly having to clean up his computer from his messes. Mine on other hand, is pristine because I am so careful.. he is 14.. his brother is even worse.. I caught him putting a fan pushing air INTO the computer case from an exhaust port

+1 on giving your son your current computer and building a new one for yourself. With a new Skylake you can get an M.2 SSD instead of 2.5", 16GB of DDR4, the new generation of 16nm nVIDIA video cards (1070 any week now or 1060 in a couple of months), etc.

Your old computer is fine for playing League of Legends. Test it on max settings yourself if you want. If it doesn't run smoothly, then it would be the video card because I know a Haswell i5 with 8 GB of memory is more than sufficient. League of Legends is no graphics powerhouse though so it should be fine.

As for 6 second video editing, watch him do one or two while you sit next to him and see how long it takes to render.
