So basically I have a i54690k and a GTX 970, and I am looking to get the most out of my system, I was wondering if someone with some experience could help me! (Oh and a VS 650w PSU)

So I have read around and I have done a small increase to my GPU, this being a small core clock increase of +100 and a Memory clock increase of +75, this being done with my power limit at 110%. Essentially with this being my first overclock, I have some questions!

-Is it true that an Overclock can drastically shorten the lifespan of your component?

- Is the Overclock that I have stated any good?

-For my CPU I am running a stock cooler on my 4690k, getting temperatures of 50°C underload, if I got an aftermarket cooler, would the CPU be viable for an overclock to 4.0Ghz+?

Solution
That depends on if your GPU voltage is factory locked or unlocked. I'm using MSI afterburner, and even if I go into settings to unlock voltage control, I don't have any control over it. If the only thing you can change is your power target, I would say turn your power target up in increments, and increase your core clock first, and then increase your memory clock after you hit the ceiling for your core clock. Small increments.

You'll definitely want a new cooler to overclock that. Exhaust is good to get rid of existing heat, but you need the good cooler on the CPU in order to cool it effectively. Example: try to get your computer to POST without a cooler on it, you will quickly overheat and the system will shut down on you. Likely...

1) If you do it incorrectly, it can shorten it's lifespan down to a few seconds from when you change the settings. So, don't do anything drastic like turn your core clock up to 2000MHz and give it an extra .5 volts. You don't want the fire department to be at your house. Otherwise? If you do it correctly, and safely, and monitor everything you should be monitoring, there wouldn't be any noticeable shortening given that your GPU (even overclocked) will run out of raw power to run games before it's components will fail.
2) I've seen some 970's with crazy overclocks. You should be able to push it a bit further, but that also depends on what rendition of a 970 you have. Well overclocked 970s perform up to par with some stock 980s.
3) Yes absolutely.

Do you think personally my CPU could handle a slight overclock now on a stock cooler with 2 120mm fans above it and exhausting heat?
Also do you have any recommendation to keep venturing in regards to GPU settings I could try?

Stock coolers are not at all advisable for overclocking.
