My monitor goes black as soon as I plug in the VGA cable

I have a new reformatted Windows 7 pc. I connected it to a TV because my old monitor broke down. Now that I have my new monitor now, the problem is, when i plug in the VGA cable, it shows the desktop but after like a second, it goes black. But I can see the desktop a little, it's like everything is shaded with black. My monitor is a ViewSonic VA1703wb.

That symptom is similar to bad monitor power source capacitors...
1. If the monitor is brand new, it may be a bad AC or video cable or connection.
2. If the monitor has digital video (DVI-HDMI) try it on digital to see if it makes any diference.
