Hi, so I'm looking to build a gaming pc for £50. I was thinking I could use the i3-550 dual core, but am a bit lost as to what else. I'm aiming to run csgo at 1080p and 60fps plus, all second hand stuff probably on ubuntu. I know it's possible as i have a friedn whose done it. The case monitor mouse keyboard etc. are no issue and not factored into the price, any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Solution
You could try an older 775 platform, and do for the processor have an Intel core 2 duo e6600, it is the minimum required processor.
For the ram 1gb is enough according to the official system requirements, but I suggest some digging

Admirable
My son is gaming on a computer with a 7 year old AMD Phenom II Quad Core CPU and a 3 year old Radeon 7790 GPU.
He was playing overwatch on it last weekend on medium graphics settings, and frame rate seemed very smooth.

Sadly in order to get older cpus in decent condition people tend to rip u off on their actual value once intel no longer manufactures them anymore. So unless u use local store or friend that has it for sale id look on ebay for legit reasonable seller cause most people charger more then the original price

Also keep i mind craigslist is a good place to find some at good price just make sure to get proof it works. I have sold 3570k and 3770k on craigslist before upgrading a few years apart. I actually sold the 3770k with the motherboard tho since it was the maximum upgrade for that socket. interestingly enough the one i sold it to used a shitty psu and killed cpu few days after using pc lol but intel replaced 3770k no questions asked didnt even inspect the cpu just shipped new one after they recieved dead one. If i was u id stick to a dual core at least for gaming tho and if needed save a few months for a gpu after getting pc and just use internal graphics till then. By the way if u qaulify for paypal credit they have the 6 month no payment plan on purchases over 100$ and some other plans allow u to pay like 40$ a month for a year but then u end up paying more then the cost of item with the 12 or 18 month plan (kinda like a home mortgage lol) with 6 month plan u can pay monthly for 6 months or pay it all off on the 6 month by the due date with no fees but if u pas ur 6 month due date then thiers late fees.

"Sigh" todays youth all rush and dont know how to save the Benjamin franklings for the better buy lol...well enjoy ur pc and walcome to the pc master race. Recently converted my friend danial to it and he has a black cloud of pure misfortune over his head lol he head to send his 4000$ pc back cause of bad cpu only for him to be a dum& a$$ and forget a surge protecter only to have his pc die a 2nd time do to power surge. So big heads up if ur spending big chunk of ur available funds and dont want t rebuild by selling organs on the black market lol id suggest investing in surge protecter for ur pc. Just frendly advise.

Thanks, great advice will be sure to, though for £50 it's not that bad if it does get frazzeled, it's not my budget, just thoughtthe exercise of doing it for the lowest price would be fun.

I would try and find a 1GB DDR5 GPU of some kind. This will give decent frame rates on an old 720p HD television. Use the GPU Hierachy Chart to compare. If you have an Intel MB that supports 1333 fsb ytou could BSEL, and VID pinmod an E6700 Core2Duo (not the newer Pentium e6700)or Q6700 from 1066 to 1333 fsb for 3.33Ghz at 1.45V. with a 32 bit OS 4GB RAM will do just fine.
The pinmods will work even on a locked BIOS like Dells had. If an unlocked BIOS even better. The Q6700 is G0 stepping many Q6600,QX6800 and all QX6700 are not. It's an overlooked chip. It was expensive when new so the cheaper Q6600, and faster QX6800 G0 got all the attention from overclockers.
Many games are still single thread so any money saved by using a 2 core CPU will produce more results if added to the GPU budget.
There are also some newer 45nm Core2Duos like the E7600 That have the 1066FSB and 3.06 base clock that can be pushed to almost 4Ghz at 1.40V.
If you can manage a 2GB DDR5 card then you'll need 5GB RAM.
