so, i have a BRAND NEW cooler master hyper t2 CPU fan that just got delivered to me yesterday.

it worked really well, but I didn't apply the thermal paste right, so the idle temp was 50C

so, I took off the CPU cooler without damaging it to reapply the thermal paste, then I put the CPU fan back on. AND GUESS WHAT? the fan doesn't spin! i didn't even do anything and it's already dead. the fan motor smells very slightly burnt, but every other CPU fan I've seen had that same smell and still worked fine. is there anyway to revive it without buying a new one?

Solution

I've never heard of a fan suddenly and inexplicably dying, but if it's truly dead, then it's dead, and the only thing to do is buy a new one.

I wouldn't consider it a big loss; the fans that came with Coolermaster's heatsinks are generally not great fans, and have noisy bearings. I would recommend one of these as a replacement:

i don't need to RMA anything, i just installed a case fan from like 2004 in place of the original fan and it's doing a WAAY better job of cooling than the dead one. that's just embarrassing, i don't think I'll be buying anything from cooler master ever again.

What were your expectations with a low-end 2 heat pipes cooler? What CPU were you trying to cool? It should be fine for a low power CPU.

the CPU cooler has 4.5 stars out of 5 on amazon, and i was trying to cool a socket 775 modded 3.16 GHz intel xeon X5460

The number of stars on Amazon has nothing to do with it's cooling performance. It has 4.5 stars because it's inexpensive and as good as a Core 2 Duo stock cooler. It obviously isn't powerful enough to cool a Xeon X5460 that has a 120W TDP.

actually, it is powerful enough, before the coolermaster, i was using a stock core 2 duo e4700 cooler for my xeon, my average temp was 75 while idle and 80-90 under load.

now that i have the coolermaster heatsink and an aftermarket fan, i get 40 while idle and 50-60 while gaming.

big tip use mx4 paste then the junk coolermaster provides is a joke youll get a probly another 5c shaved off so roughly 35-55c it would be personally im running a Raijintek Rhea CPU Cooler on a i3 with mx4 paste and its sitting quite happy at 35c never goes beyond 50c
