So I have all these old hard drives sitting around, both IDE and SATA. I want to use them as external drives but I don't want to buy that many enclosures. I know that because the Sata/IDE cables are very different from USB cables its not possible to make a direct transfer cable, so the signal must run through some sort of processing unit. I have an adept knowledge of soldering, and was wondering if I bought my own processing chip if it would be possible to solder my own adapter. And also if this was possible if it would be cheaper than buying 5 or more hdd enclosures.

Solution
naw you would be better off just buying premade units. If you made custom ones the adapters would be huge and finding the parts to make them next to impossible

Alright thank you. I kinda figured that would be the case but I thought I would check.
