Obviously this is an odd question due to lack of benchmarks for the 1070 and the fact it will obviously out perform the 970.
Currently I have a Asus Strix 960, with Pascal I plan to upgrade, maxwell cards have begun to drop prices considerably, currently talking to a guy and I can get a 970 from 175 or 240 (at most, I hope to get him to around 200)
With that in mind, is it worth it to get a 970, or spend the extra money on the 1070 for the power and Vram increase?
I am a casual gamer, due to my work schedule though I love to game at high settings and fps, I currently play at 1080, but would like to upgrade to 1440p (Not 4K any time soon).

Solution
If you can afford it, I would go for the newer 1070. The card is thought to be as fast as titan X. that would meant that 1070 would be 50-60 % faster if true.

Whether it is worth it will be up to you to decide, ultimately.
Things to keep in mind:
1. Yes, the 970 is getting cheaper and can still hold its own
2. The 1070 uses less power, while being more powerful. This will save you in the long run on your electric bill. ;)
3. The 1070 uses newer technology, and will be supported for longer.
4. For higher res gaming, the 1070 will be your better bet.

Titan X is slightly slower than 2x GTX970s on SLI...or..around 50-80% (game dependent) faster than a single GTX970.
If 1070 is really on that level, it is worth to wait.

I am already thinking to sell my 2 GTX970s and get a single 1070, to reduce the power consumption of my rig.

get a 1070, much better price/performance while using less power you will get a better overall experience with it. honestly ive had nothing but lag, crashes and disappointment with my 970 best to wait for the new cards

If you're a casual gamer with a 1080p monitor and can get a clean used GTX 970 for $200 by all means do so. Sell your GTX 960 for at least two thirds of that and you've got a nice upgrade for not a lot of money. Save the GTX 1070 for when you actually need it.
