Should I upgrade from the GTX 660 to the GTX 1080?

I'm looking forward to getting into 4K/VR gaming for some time not to mention my 660 can no longer play the latest AAA games at a smooth 60 fps (e.g DOOM). I'm planning on getting a GTX 1080 to go along with my existing rig specified below:

CPU: Intel i7 2600k @ 3.4 GHz (Stock)
RAM: 12 GB DDR3
GPU: 1x GTX 660
PSU: Corsair 800 W

Should I upgrade? Would there be any bottlenecks?

Solution
I would say yes you should, even if a Sandy Bridge was a bottleneck you'd have a card that will last you a long time. When you want to upgrade your CPU you can just switch the card in. The only other option would be to possibly look at the 1070 and use money saved towards an all round upgrade.

you would need to overclock the cpu, then it would be fine

what corsair power supply model exactly?

Sorry, I meant an 850 W PSU (Corsair's RM850X). Got a bit sleepy while writing the post.

good to go

12gb?

how are the ram sticks divided by size?

8 + 4?

use a ram testing program, make sure they are running in dual channel

1080/1070 is really just a die shrunk maxwell, IE it is does not support async compute on a hardware level using the driver as a software solution to divide up tasks under DX 12.

sry my bad i thought pascal was going to have hardware level async compute, i know nvidia is planning to make some true dx12 cards but the 1080/1070 are fundamentally the same as maxwell with just a die shrink and some optimizations.

http://www.mobipicker.com/nvidia-gtx-1080-directx-12-benchmarks-async-compute/

http://www.windowscentral.com/amd-graphics-cards-huge-gains-dx12

i consider hardware level support for async compute to be "true" dx12, software solutions are just lazy lol.

There is several way of implementing async compute. The idea behind async compute is to increase gpu utilization. If you need specific hardware to increase your gpu utilization then there might be something wrong with the design. Think about it carefully. Async compute specifically need DX12. and lets face it not all game will use dx12 and dx12 ia not a replacement for dx11. amd will be in trouble if they really need to rely on that ACE to really fully utilize their gpu. seeing maxwell and pascal did not benefit from async and usually faster than amd in dx11 shows that nvidia gpu have no utilization problem like amd card was.

And the fact that async compute need to be tweak per card basis (as per hitman dev claim) i can easily see the feature are not appealing to game developer for pc version of their game unless they were sponsored.

So in general, from what I assume I could understand, I should go ahead in upgrading to the GTX 1080 provided I replace my CPU sometime in the future to eliminate bottlenecks. Should I go ahead with Skylake or wait for Kaby Lake/Cannonlake?

@renz496, @garrett1986 - Does asynchronous computing affect the performance of today's DX12 titles drastically enough to hold off for the moment?

There are 3x 4 GB sticks, the third being a recent addition by a relative, running in dual channel.

you sure? 2 sticks would be running in dual channel

the third by itself will run in single channel

@maxalge | Yup, 2x 4GB sticks in dual channel with the third running in single.

@renz496 | I see, thank you for clearing that up :)

To summarize, get the GTX 1080 as an upgrade and be sure to get a better CPU as well (OC being a temporary solution). Any suggestions as to which processor should I upgrade to? Once again, I appreciate all the replies :)
