I have come across an old I5-3330S in my old computer and was wondering if this CPu is good enough to be re purposed for my gaming machine - my CPU at the moment is an FX-6300

Solution
For cpu bound games like starcraft 2 that i5 probably will win against that 6300. In any case since you have both cpu can try it yourself and see the difference.

I did some tests and the performance improvement from the I5 is outstanding - I think my FX chip may have been faulty as I was not getting as good performance as my friend with the same chip - He has a lower spec GPU yet got more FPS than me in most games. But now I am running GTA V - Just Cause 3 and others at Ultra with 100ish FPS

Probably your FX6300 bottleneck your gpu? Worse thing that could happen with cpu bottlenecking the gpu is you got lower performance than weaker gpu. This usually happen with games that is less intensive with gpu. Experience it myself when upgrading my GTS250 to GTX460 in the past with intel E7500. i got worse performance with GTX460. Luckily on my part just OCing the cpu solve the problem for me.
