I clean reinstall windows 10 once a month
many people recommend to unplug all hdds when installing windows to SSD

because windows then will put some files like boot file on the hdd ?

ok
any way to disable the hdds from bios instead open the case and unplug them
when installing windows 10 to my SSD ?
I have gigabyte z170x gaming 5 bios f4

Since it's the motherboard they might get power from the PSU, but if the motherboard's SATA ports are disabled they should not be usable, therefore no data would be able to be written on them during the Windows installation process. You shouldn't see them as an option to install Windows as well.

Hey there, sosolola.

The recommendation about disconnecting the secondary storage drives is a good one. However, I'm not sure if you can disable them from your BIOS/UEFI. Perhaps you might be able to disable specific SATA ports as I've heard of similar options, but I guess your best bet would be to check that out in the motherboard's User Manual or to contact the mobo manufacturer's customer support and ask for yourself.

May I ask why you need to make a fresh install of your OS each month?

Hmm it's strange that the system's performance would deteriorate at such rate even when you are using an SSD. Especially having in mind that the only part a drive plays while gaming, is to load the game when it's starter initially and to load the in-game loading screens faster.
If you are having issues with your drive - backup your data and test it with a diagnostic tool to see what's the situation with it.

Other than that you should take a look at that article on tips for SSD users: https://www.maketecheasier.com/12-things-you-must-do-when-running-a-solid-state-drive-in-windows-7/ (I know it says Win 7, but the tips are also viable for the newer versions of Windows as well).

and it support to disable each stata port from bios
my question
does disable sata ports for hdds in bios is the same as unplug them
no power or data will access these hdds during the instlation of windows 10 to my ssd ?

Rather than doing a clean install of Windows every month, why don't you clone your OS drive after a clean install, after you have done any tweaks to get things setup like you want it. Then when you want to "re-install" you can just restore from the cloned disk image and you will be back to where you started. (I use Acronis True Image Home to clone my OS drive about once every month, and keep 2-3 old copies in the event I get a virus infection on the computer or if something else goes fishy, I just restore from the image).
