Hello, so I recently purchased a new computer. This is my first actual build other then upgrading computers and cleaning them etc. So I spent 1100 on this build but I messed up.
Cpu ;and fx-9590 4.7ghz
Cooler;R1 universal
Mobo ;msi 970a krait edition (ye I kno, I've ordered a new one but forgot it's name, it's a 990xa I think)
Gfx; gtx 970
With a 650w psu, my question is, after reading online they recommend water cooling, but I read the R1 universal will be sufficient enough? Also I've read bad reviews but am ignoring them hoping I'll be fine haha, what'd your opinion on this cpu and is the R1 universal good enough?

Solution
Just because it is recommended - it doesn't mean that other solutions will not work. You have two choices - build it with the R1 - or return the R1 (if possible) and purchase a water cooling solution. I would think that unless you are cranking this up to 11 - you should be fine with Air. You should monitor your temps in either case - but if the R1 is not sufficiently cooling - you can (I know it's profane!) - UNDER CLOCK.

As much as we all want to squeeze as much juice out as we can - under clocking is not as bad as it sounds - less cycles - less heat - less thermal damage/strain. This is only IF you build with the R1 and it is insufficient. A water cooling solution has a better chance of being sufficient (it is recommended.)...

Good luck.

The Cryorig r1 should be plenty sufficient, just don't expect to be overclocking the chip.
With an air cooler like that you wouldn't notice a huge difference going to water cooling anyway.

Thank you, I'm gonna put in the new motherboard today when it's delivered, see how it goes, I guess order a water cooling solution if needed.
Do you recommend going self built water cooling? Or just off the shelf cooling? Thank you very much!

It will work, but personally i would return the cooler and get a Corsair H110i for around the same price.
As a sidenote, my-oh-my have you made a bad purchasing decision :)

The corsair i mentioned, will do nicely: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-cpu-cooler-cw9060026ww

Let me just throw in here 2 things, 1 a 650w PSU is generally not enough for a 9590 and a discrete GPU like you have. What PSU is it? 650w is just at the bottom and unless its ULTRA high quality you will have problems with it. The processor alone is 220w tdp and has been shown to pull over 300w in tests at full load.

Second AMD specifically says to be able to run the 9590 anywhere near normal you need a liquid cooler, in fact the only cooler they sell with is a liquid cooler. Anyone who tells you you can run it on air, well they are correct, if you underclock the hell out of it, and then whats the point?!

Now the best thing possible would be to return all this stuff and buy yourself, basically anything else, but barring that you need to get yourself a decent liquid cooler to even run that cpu at stock speeds.

Indeed you did mess up. The FX-9590 is an extreme beast of a processor, but it can be tamed.
Your choice of MB should allow for the 220W TDP draw the chip requires when under load.
I recommend the ASUS Crosshair V Formula Z as most other MBs that support the AMD3+ socket are designed for CPUs up to 140W . The VRMs just wont handle it.
An air cooled setup is not the way to go. And don't be fooled by those who say differently unless you live in Norway.
The Corsair H110 will keep temps in check up to 5.2GHz. The cooler that is supplied with the unit is inadequate for any more than stock frequency.
Your choice of PSU at 650W will give you BIG problems and I recommend a minimum 1000W Gold or Platinum Certified.
