Hi I'm looking to rent a server to host a modded Minecraft server on. I'm not the normal 3yr old that dosent know what they are doing. I have expirence doing this type of thing, but the ammount of info on this specific topic is few and far between.

My options are

I3-3220 3.3 Ghz
16GB RAM
2 TB HDD
$25 a month

I5-3470 3.6 - 3.8 GHz
16 GB RAM
2 TB HDD
$35 a month

I'm sure that the I5 is faster, but for starting out I believe that the I3 is better for the money

Solution
It's been a while since I did any hosting, but last I checked, Minecraft is not multithreaded, so they both will probably perform similarly with a single server running. The extra 20% clockspeed will probably be unnoticeable in most cases.

I plan to start small and upgrade as I need the performance.
1 server with ~ 50 player slots
1 server with ~ 4 player slots

Also upstream / downstream ? I'm not sure what this means
The ISO the servers run on is.

Our datacenter is fed by redundant fiber feeds from Hurricane Electric, Cogent Communications, and the Kansas City Internet Exchange (KCIX).[\quote]

Probably, but when I get into multiple servers the I5 will definitely pull ahead if I set the PID affinity right correct?

I would assume so. I dunno what mods you're running, but the CPU you run it on only needs to be "fast enough", and the i3 may or may not be.
