Hi all,

So, my question is basically one that has already been asked around the web:

http://superuser.com/questions/1012759/does-radeon-older-gpus-like-hd6xxx-series-support-3440x1440-or-4k-monitors

In a few days I am probably switching to a 34'' Samsung S34E790CN Monitor, but I still have the outdated Radeon HD 6950, since I don't really play any games and don't care about GPU that much. I am not sure, however, if the card will be able to handle the screen's native resolution, which is 3440x1440.

Has anyone tried that already with the 6900 series? If the answer is "it won't handle it", then could you please suggest a cheap GPU for office work only (second-hand is welcome) that does handle it?

Thanks,

Adrian

That could be an issue, DP1.2 should be capable of 4K60 from a bandwidth perspective, but apparently the card specs don't support CVT-R2. You can still try a custom timing if it doesn't work out of the box, and replacement if even that doesn't work

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I was a little concerned with the AMD website saying that HD 6950 can go 2560x1600 max. But I guess the extra horizontal pixels shouldn't be a technical problem. I don't know how the drivers would react, though.

See if you can find one of these in your country:

The monitor worked like a charm with the Radeon out of the box. The resolution was properly detected and applied without any manipulation. Thanks for your input.

Looks like AMD needs to update their specifications ;)

Most likely the original release drivers didn't support newer timings but later ones do. Good to hear it worked out of the box.

Thank you for the quick reply! I guess you are already using another GPU, but with the 6950 over DP everything was fine, right? I am just double-checking, because I plan to buy a new PC later this year, but I need to upgrade my main display ASAP and I was eyeing the LG 34UC99-W

Yup, it all worked great. I was highly dissatisfied with the aforementioned Samsung due to its horrific viewing angles (verified not to be my unit's problem), and got the Dell competitor instead. No problems here also.
