Hello everyone.

I currently have 2x Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 in SLI (sandwiched together as I dont have more slots available).

I play at 4k and the cards are really struggling to keep playable frame rates with the latest games so Im looking to upgrade to 2x GTX 1080.

I know custom coolers are better than the reference one but the problem is that the ventilation in my case is not so good (I have an Alienware Aurora R4 2011) and that I have no space between the cards, in fact when I installed the 970´s it was kind of problematic ( I had to remove the backplate of the lower card because the fans of the upper one where touching it and I had put something in between the lower card and my PSU because the same thing was happening). After all I got the cards running and temperatures are acceptable.

So I have been reading that blower coolers are better for this type of configuration, but as I said, the cooling isnt as good as the custom ones and I would want some room for some mild overclocking. So the question is: should I take my chances and grab 2x GTX 1080 Gigabyte G1 when they are out or 2x Reference? (Founders, even tho they are probable more expensive now).

Thank you very much for your attention, please let me know your thoughts.

You need to temper your expectations, if you have heat problems now, you will have them again with AIB coolers.

Reference coolers were designed for your specific situation and would be your best bet to keep the temps down. If that means you can't overclock, it sucks but, your only other choice is to do some more upgrading then.

IMO buy the reference coolers.

You could do a custom water cooling setup for both of them using one radiator and be done with it.
