Backing up to external hard drive suddenly crashes without completing

I'd advise you to reinstall the backup software and even try resolving the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling the external HDD as a device from Device Manager. I'd also see how the HDD will behave if you swap the USB cable that is connecting it and also the USB port on your computer.
You might also want to run the Short and Long tests from your HDD manufacturer's brand-specific diagnostic tool. This utility will help you determine the health and SMART data of the external drive.
