I am on Windows 7 Ultimate and I have automatic updates OFF, but I pressed the check for updates button and it's been doing this for 20 minutes without change... Anybody know how to fix this?

Solution
Open start and search for Services, press Enter. Stop BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) and then stop WUAUSERV (Windows Update Service). Close Services. Open Windows Explorer Windows+E, navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ and delete the Download folder. Restart, make sure that BITS and WUAUSERV have started as they should, check for updates.

Please note that WUAUSERV may be set to a delayed start. This means it could take up to five minutes after boot before the service starts. Start it manually if you must. But be sure that BITS is started before you start WUAUSERV
