Hi guys,
It's going to be a long post so I'd be grateful if you'd lend your valuable time to read and help.

MY RIG: (I'M OLD SCHOOL!)

CPU: Intel (1st gen) core i3 540
MOBO: Gigabyte H55M-S2V
PSU: Gigabyte 620w superb E620
RAM: 2x2 GB of DDR3 Ram (1333 bus)
GPU: Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 660 2GB DDR5
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate

Okay so, My computer was running fine since February when suddenly I noticed that it fails to shut down completely. I mean, It shuts down but the power light keeps on and all the fans (including the GPU's) keeps running unless I turn off my PSU or unplug the main cable. This continued for a bit, and I kind of developed a habit of pulling the plug. But the main problem happened couple of months later. My PC started to randomly crash out of a game with an error: "Graphics card driver stopped working and recovered successfully". I updated the Nvidia drivers to the latest iteration but the problem persisted and became more frequent and now it hard reboots while gaming. Within a couple of days my computer became almost unusable with random reboots even without gaming. I searched the internet and updated my drivers again, updated my MOBO BIOS although it was working wonderfully before, restored my windows and my CPU overclock to the default but with no avail.

I removed my GTX 660 and turned on the On-board GPU in BIOS and installed the drivers, Now it's working fine (Shut down problem still persists) but I couldn't game on it. I did some breadboarding but couldn't figure it out as my mobo sometimes beeps and the next time it's just silent! :/ What's up with that?!

Anyway, So I tried searching for hardware defects. I tried a Corsair CX450 and the shut down problem persisted. Used my Gigabyte PSU on a different rig and it worked fine.
My friend is running my GTX 660 without any hiccups.

So, if it's not the PSU or GPU it must be the MOBO. I don't have an H55 chipset lying around so I think I have to look for one online and buy it. As everything works okay except gaming I'm ruling out any processor defects. I've seen in one of the online forums that some guy's problems (almost same as mine) persisted even after changing the motherboard.

Is there any way to solve this without buying one cause I'll be moving abroad later this year and I don't want to spend too much on my old rig. I do have a laptop but I use my desktop for mostly light gaming.

Thank you so much for patiently reading this long post. Any help or suggestion is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

my fathers pc did this before it kicked the can it was a video slot error e.g the pci lane on the board was going bad there isnt really much you can do to fix it tbh its just a matter of time before the thing seizes up completely

my fathers did random crashes and random boot ups half way threw programs random beeps which i finally caught as failed video interface or output tried a diffrent card that didnt solve anything tried a diffrent psu also after my fathers pc got these symptoms it started to randomly kill of parts of the pc e.g his gpu was buggered due to power delivery naffed

Hey Beyondlogic!
Thanks for the reply!
I had a hunch that the PCI express port is going bad. So, I really have to get a new motherboard I guess... :(
I have an ATI Radeon 5570 lying around somewhere. I thought I'd give it a try but if the PCI port is the culprit it wont work anyway and I'm risking frying it so I don't think I will do that. I guess I'm pretty fortunate that it didn't fry my GTX660. I'll look for an upgrade then. I just hope it works out after I buy a new MOBO.
Anyway, Thanks a lot man!

no problem i doubt all your parts are dead in the water so you may be able to replace them

personally id just replace your processor and motherboard and do a complete reinstall of the windows 7 os

drop me a pm if you need a hand with parts ill gladly try to figuire it out

personally if your short on cash

jumping to a i3 with a h70 board 1150 would be a enough and you could use your ddr3 memory to save some or jump ship to a full 1151 socket

in terms of gpu i wouldnt upgrade till pascal or polaris gpus ship so that way your less likely of needing a upgrade

anyway drop me a line of were your located ill try to help you best of my ability also determine a budget

Hi,
Hope you're doing okay.
So, yeah I searched around for a while and well the old gen chipsets are no so cheap afterall! At first i thought i'd go for the motherboard only but now i think i'll go for the core i5 6500 with a decent mobo.(probably gigabyte/asus). I might have to sell this PC soon enough but I just didn't like the idea of spending my money on a PC that just wont change in the terms of performance. Even if i don't sell it, It'd be a good build even for gaming for a couple of years i guess.
Thanks for the help! Stay frosty! :)
