Hey guys! I just bought a XFX XTR 850w 80+ Gold PSU because my 550 xfx one died. I currently have a R9 390 by MSI and with this new PSU I was wondering if I would be able to crossfire 2 of those.

Given that more powerful GPUs are coming out, I would like to have my graphics horsepower on par, but GPUs are crazy high here in Argentina (a gtx 980 is well over 1000U$D), but oddly enough AMD GPUs are much cheaper than their nvidia counterparts.

So, all my questions would be:

-Can this new PSU handle 2-way Crossfire of MSI R9 390?
-Is it worth getting 390 Crossfire for 1080p, and near future 4k gaming?
-Should I get another 390 or shell out an extra 13k pesos (about 950U$D) for when the gtx 1070/1080 come out?

My sistem specs are:

-I5 6500.
-Gigabyte H170 Gaming 3 (DDR4).
-(x2) Corsair Vengeance 8gb DDR4 2400mhz.
-Sandisk SSD 250GB.
-WD Blue HDD 1TB.
-MSI R9 390.

Thanks for all the help!

the XFX XTR 850 is more than enough to crossfire 2 R9 390's

For 1080p at this point the 390 will handle anything you can throw at it, even at 1440p it shines, for 4k you will need it and you will not be able to max out 4k even with crossfire.

I would not spend so much extra for a Nvidia, this will do the job for you, I just don't see the value even given the extra performance.

So I should keep a single R9 in your eyes? Or xfire if I get another card at discount price? I thought 2 390s would do the job in 4k :( if not the 390, what single card/ski/crossfire setup you think would be worth getting/give greater performance than my GPU at a reasonable price?

2 390's will do the job in 4k, but you can't max out 4k with them. Really you're going to need the next generation of cards to do that.

I would get the second 390 when you are ready to go 4k, until then it would be a waste to use it at 1080p you won't get a huge advantage. I mean you would see a difference, but the games all likely run well enough already so does it matter?

Thanks for all the answers Rogue! I'll follow your advice, save for a 4k display (14 thousand pesos, 1000U$D the cheapest one!), and when I go for it, get a r9 390 for crossfire. At that point prices certainly will drop. Thanks for the help!

Make sure you get a freesync display to take advantage of all your cards features.

Sadly at this time the only 4k displays available at basic 4k Samsung ones which are assembled here, as imports are closed. 75hz 2ms displays is what's available. If I can find a freesync compatible one I'll try get it, thanks!
