The extender should initially be set up as near to the router as possible.
Once it's connected successfully to the router (wirelessly) and setup is complete, it should then be placed approximately midway between the router and the place where the WiFi signal is weakest, taking care not to move the extender too far away from the router that it loses the connection.
Check the appropriate status light on the extender as you move it away from the router to ensure it stays green (ie still within range).
Also bear in mind that not all range extenders are equal. Some have a better range than others (usually shown on the packaging) so choose carefully when buying.

True - but half bandwidth is better than no connection at all - it's still perfectly adequate for web browsing, goods ordering, email etc.
