Long story short, I upgraded my motherboard a few years ago, had some hard drive issues, and not really sure what version of windows 7 I have. Probably retrieved through questionable means, but anyway its not genuine. I recently bought a OEM windows 7 key looking to solve the problem, although after research it does not sound like that will work. I dont know what to buy, im just ready to have a genuine copy. Thanks!

If you are planning on migrating to Windows 10 anyways I would not bother getting a Windows 7 license. Since you are saying that you want to become legitimate, why don't you purchase a legitimate Windows 10 license from a legitimate vendor (Microsoft itself, Amazon itself, Best Buy, etc.) because some "not-fully legitimate" vendors resell used activation keys as new ones and when you go to use them you find out you can't. Once you have the key, you can download the appropriate Windows 10 version if the key didn't already come with it and you are good to go.

Tried to verify key, and i got this, "The product key you entered appears to be for software pre-installed by the device manufacturer. Please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options."

Try other sites like digitalriver for the ISO then. OEM keys won't work I guess.
