DELL PowerEdge servers

Poring over EBay, I drooled over some of the servers listed. They have fast hard drives, quad core CPUs and are cheap! What would I need to learn/buy to build a rack-mounted music production machine? Please answer in general terms as I can research/learn without details ... I just would like to find out what I need ... I think!

BUYER BEWARE

I have a couple old xeon based systems from dell, they are DUAL cpu, quad cores - thats 8 cores!
They are slower than hell, louder than a helicopter, and hotter than a pizza oven, you can also use them as ramps for your trailer they are so heavy and sturdy.

Reconsider!

First thing you need to understand is that rack mount servers are LOUD. They are intended to be in a room with no people. If you have any kind of audio recording to be done you will need to isolate them as far away as possible.

Step 1. Find someone else with a PowerEdge
Step 2. Be in the same room with that while it is running
Step 3. Analyze how that would work with a 'music production' setup.

People see the word 'server', and 'ebay cheap', and assume OMG POWER FOR CHEAP!!
Not so much.
