How can I get my floppy disks read by my computer? Bought external drive unit!

Recently bought an external floppy disk drive for my old floppies. Computer keeps telling me to format. Cannot do, it will erase the disk. They were written on a word processor from years ago. Does anybody have any answers. Tried Jihosoft Recovery, but it does nothing. Need a solution to break through these disks!

Floppies were not the most reliable of formats, could just be a bad disk or disks or the drive can't read them. At times the floppy disk drive would go out of alignment a bit, and when they wrote the disks, the only drive that can read them would be the original drive. Try a different disk drive.
