Hello,

My old computer ran on an Intel® Core™ i5-3210M Processor (3M Cache, up to 3.10 GHz) but completely quit on me. I have a different laptop, but the processor is a little older, Intel® Core™ i3-380M Processor (3M Cache, 2.53 GHz). I have safely removed the i5 processor but am having trouble figuring out if the i5 processor is compatible in the i3 processor's place. If anyone could give me some insight on this before I make the switch, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Solution
The processor is not compatible. The i3 socket is PGA988 while the i5 is FCPGA988 basically G1 vs G2, and unfortunately there is no backwards compatibility.
It really is just the die being flipped so doesn't make a difference to the socket itself especially when the pins aren't compatible anyways. It is annoying when they want to keep switching label fcpga, rpga, pga when it is all of the above. Why can't they just use the actual socket name g1 and g2. They cause the same confusion with socket m, p and 478.
