How hard is setting up a spare modem?

So I live with a person who likes to unplug the cable modem and router, throw them in their car, and drive off when they get angry.

I'm wanting to buy a modem identical to the one we currently have, to use whenever he does this. How hard would it be to set up a spare modem? Is there anything in particular I should look out for when setting up a modem on my own? I'm good with tech and routers, but never messed around with modems before.

The exact model of modem is a Motorola Surfboard 5101, I believe, and my ISP is WOW Cable. In case this helps.

It doesn't work like that.
You'd need to register a new modem with the ISP. MAC address and all that. Do that more than a couple of times, and the ISP is going to give you the stink...

The owner of this house is paying the ISP (Neither me nor him), but doesnt want to do anything about it since the guy stealing the modem is her adult son. So I'm wanting to know how hard getting a spare modem is.
