I just sold my 295x2. What should I buy now? I play at 60hz 1080p. I am thinking of buying the 1080. I was also looking at buying the Titan x, just because of that 12gb. But... Will that really help at 1080p?

Solution

No because that video card is way overkill for 1080p. You will never use the full power of that card at 1080p. You could easily get away with a R9 390 or gtx 970 and will get 60 FPS all the time.

Polaris isn't too far away.

How much performance gain of you think I'll get from a 295x2 to a 1080. I couldn't stand the stuttering and the frame drops and the micro stuttering in the 295x2.

going from cf to a single chip will solve most of the issues it will be a nice change

For 1080p at 60Hz games are not using more than 4gb vram, most don't even use 3gb. With only 60Hz anything from a 970 upwards will work very well. To be honest a 1070 looks to be overkill, a single 980Ti was considered overkill for 1080p @ 60Hz and the 1070 is supposed to be slightly better but I haven't seen any independent benchmarks yet.

For games that supported crossfire well your 295x2 was overkill so your only really going to see a gain in games that don't support crossfire or do not support it well. If you have TitanX money why not buy a 1070 or 1080 and buy yourself a better monitor 1440p @ 144Hz? Your biggest gain is not having the problems associated with crossfire and a 1070 will give you that and should perform similar to a 295x2 or slightly better

Or wait for what AMD has to offer? Chances are Polaris 10 is going to be a great card. If you are justing looking for the best performing card on the market the Pro Duo is going to be that for a long time and it's pretty energy efficient.

When the EVGA GTX 1080 releases grab one of those. It's going to be a significant upgrade for you. Horsepower won't be a huge upgrade but the all around performance will be with much cooler operation, no driver issues with multi-GPU's, and it will use MUCH less power.

@thor220, as the OP is complaining about the problems with crossfire the pro duo will give him the same problems he has now, he doesn't need more power for 1080p 60Hz. I also wouldn't wait for Polaris it looks like its going to be at least another 4 months until it hits the shops

You have absolutely no basis for that statement. AMD have already announced they are revealing their cards at Computex and have said awhile ago that their cards would drop before or near the start of summer. If the OP only need 1080p performance all the more reason to look at Polaris because even the smaller polaris 11 will be able to max out 1080p and will be cheaper than what Nvidia has coming out.

Pro duo is the same crossfire card like the r9 295x2 and even older 7990. You said you couldn't stand the microstuttering , this card will just have the same problem.

So the 1080 is the best bet then?

Crossfire means 2 295x2 cards that runing x8 the op had 1 295x2 and for the fps drops the card was not resposible the heat inside his case is the problem.

Yeap only single gpus with nvidia gsync or freesync for amd can be smooth as butter!
As i said before , best bet for me is to wait for GP100 on some months http://wccftech.com/nvidia-gp100-chip-taped-gp-104-arriving-q2-2016
HBM2 will be unbeatable for 4K also keep in mind that nvidia have a hard time for dx12 and both 980ti and 1080 cant async properly so you will not gain any performance switching from dx11 to dx12 like amd cards does but dx12 will take some time yet , so for safe bet i thing GP100 is the key , they should fix this thing with the async and difference from 1080 to a GP100 will be just big like 980 -> 980ti. You know that history is repeatable... Its the same story like when upgrading from 780ti to 980...
But if you buy the 1080 please don't buy the retail/founders edition one because temps will not be good and you will not be able to oc properly without throttling.

***Sorry just forgot that you don't have a card XD You dont have another choice... 1080 is the way to go!

no... crossfire is any combination of gpu chips working together. the 295x2 is a dual gpu card that puts dual "Hawaii" 290x chips on the same pcb it will still have the same issues as crossfire because that is what it is. as for the x8 thing that is false you can have a crossfire with 4 cards all in x16 mode if your mobo supports it. and how can you say heat is the issue when op not once menchined temps as the issue or had any issues related to tempts

No because that video card is way overkill for 1080p. You will never use the full power of that card at 1080p. You could easily get away with a R9 390 or gtx 970 and will get 60 FPS all the time.
