Hi guys...I have a very crappy Dell Vostro 230 that is driving me crazy...it appears I can barely even upgrade this thing at all...

my current processor is a Core 2 Duo E7500 @2.93 GHz
motherboard is a 7N90W Socket LGA 775 ATX

I want to upgrade to an i5 or possibly even an i7 for best gaming performance but everywhere I look I am not finding accurate answers to weather my current mobo can even handle these processors...

my comp is so crappy that I cant even upgrade my mobo..I am stuck with the one that came from Dell...

can anyone please help? I want to play the latest games but simply cant because of my dual core...

Solution

Your best bet would be to research the Dell Vostro and see what the fastest Core2Quad it came with and buy that, because its possible it may not support any other processors (happens often with Dells,HPs, etc).

Like I said though this is not going to be much of an upgrade for game playing without a decent GPU. And honestly that PC is so old I wouldn't waste the time/money when you could be saving it up to build a low end...

There are no i5 or i7 processors for that socket, they were not until the next generation. The best processor you can get is a Core2Quad. It will give you a decent bump, should also play many newer games, but its pretty close to being phased out in minimum specs.

You can usually get the CPU cheap used, but honestly I would not spend any more money on that PC. Any decent GPU to play newer games will bottleneck quite a bit on it.

thanks for the quick reply!! Yeah everything you said is exactly how I feel...not sure if I want to dump anymore money into this computer...

quick question though...can I get ANY core2quad? or do I have to find the right one for my mobo? I am still willing to upgrade if the price is right and super cheap.

basicly its like putting money in a old car you keep fixing it and fixing it and in the end spend more money on it than a new one would cost you.
i would get for only ~150$ a fx 6300 and a am3+ motherboard as its teh cheapest thing i can think of off the top of my head. this setup would run games well with a good gpu
as for a gpu whats your price
