Hi
I was under the impression sata devices drew power from the mobo. Now I find no header on my mobo. So thinks I - maybe the psu supplies it? If so - where is there a 5 pin [*6 connector] on the psu? Nothing in the user manual.
Cheers - DGT884

No, SATA devices don't draw power from the mobo. They only connect to the mobo via data cable. SATA power is separate and supplied by the PSU.

The connectors look like this:

Many thanks for your prompt reply. I'm still not sure how the storage device receives its power.Yes; i have that connector at the device end [It's a modular ribbon(ish) series cable] - The other end is a *6 connector with 5 pins. The data cable is connected ok. Is power delivered via the data cable? If not - How does it get from the PSU to the storage device?
OK - Problem solved. It was the 5pin con. that threw me. PSU has 6pin sata & ide outlets [Only 5 pins used on the device side]. Lesson learned - LOOK/Note/connect
Thanks again - Denis

That's a molex-to-SATA power adapter, not a SATA power cable.

You have modular PSU than ?

and with this cable you connect a SATA-device to your PSU and have power, right?

Yes, but it's not a "SATA power cable". It's an adapter. You don't use an adapter if you have proper connections available, and OP would have to purchase it separately whereas his PSU (most likely) has these connections already.

It's like telling someone to use a DVI to HDMI adapter when their card has more than one HDMI output.
